The ESG Edit #2 – October 2025: As We Approach the End of the Year

"Sustainability isn’t about ticking boxes, it’s about making decisions today that still hold value tomorrow."

Çağatay Yalçın, CTO, Terra Reporting

Welcome to the second edition of The ESG Edit!

Today is the first day of October and as we enter the final quarter of the year, the window for reflection and decisive action is narrowing. This is the moment when strategies are tested, priorities are reassessed, and the groundwork for 2026 is set. ESG is no longer a background theme, it is the framework shaping how organizations allocate resources, report transparently, and demonstrate long-term value.

In this edition, we explore how the role of the Chief Sustainability Officer is evolving into a truly strategic position, what the Omnibus directive means for reporting obligations, and take a look at what we’ve been up to, sharing highlights from events and conversations that have shaped the past months.

It’s the season of decisions. Let’s make them count.

From Slogan to Strategy: CSOs Rise to the Moment

A recent Wall Street Journal piece, “Sustainability Chiefs Are Recalibrating in Bid to Keep Decarbonization on Map,”shows how many CSOs are shifting from being visible advocates of big climate goals toward roles anchored in strategy, accountability, and business fundamentals. Chief Sustainability Officer of PepsiCo, Jim Andrews notes that what used to feel like tailwinds – broad public enthusiasm, fast-moving infrastructure – are now headwinds.

As we approach the final stretch of 2025, this evolution becomes even more critical. It’s no longer enough to lead with aspiration; CSOs must be equipped to make strategic decisions, set realistic, material goals, integrate with finance and operations, and lean on credible data and reporting tools. The article highlights that those who adapt are treating sustainability not as PR or compliance, but as core to value creation and overall risk management.

On the Spotlight: Group-Level ESG Reporting

As CSOs shift from setting broad targets to making strategic decisions, one of their biggest challenges is aligning data across the entire group. That’s why we integrated Group-Level ESG Reporting within our platform.

With this feature, companies can consolidate ESG data from subsidiaries, regions, or business units into a single, coherent picture, while keeping the option to drill down into local detail. It eliminates manual consolidation errors, improves transparency by aligning reports with how the business truly operates, provides multi-dimensional insights from granular to high-level views, and scales seamlessly as the organization evolves. Instead of reconciling spreadsheets, CSOs gain reliable insights to inform strategy, meet CSRD requirements, and communicate clearly with stakeholders.

Fedrus International

Fedrus International, a Belgian building materials group, chose the Terra ESG Platform to move beyond spreadsheets and manual processes toward streamlined, audit-ready CSRD reporting. Their earlier ESG tool failed to answer auditor questions and couldn’t scale to their needs. With Terra, they launched a pilot covering two critical KPIs, GHG emission intensity (Scopes 1 & 2) and LTIFR (Lost Time Injury Frequency Rate), while building toward a full end-to-end solution.

For Fedrus, the outcome is automation, error reduction, and more frequent reporting with consistent data. Their story shows how upgrading to a scalable ESG platform helps turn compliance burdens into a foundation for transparency and impact.

Fedrus International, a leading wholesale building materials company headquartered in Belgium, has chosen the Terra ESG Platform, to enhance its ESG reporting processes and achieve full compliance.

After a successful pilot phase, Fedrus International selected Terra Reporting to support their ESG efforts with a platform built around four core pillars: Record, Report, Act, and Collaborate. Fedrus International now has end-to-end support for ESG data collection, performance tracking, regulatory compliance, and stakeholder engagement.

This transition marks a significant step for Fedrus International, moving away from manual processes and spreadsheets to a streamlined, automated reporting framework.

In this blog, we look at the Omnibus proposal, why it was introduced, what changes it brings to CSRD timelines, and most importantly, why it should not be seen as a reason to slow down ESG efforts.
